Caption: Glassy-winged sharpshooter research. Close-up of a young adult glassy-winged sharpshooter (Homalodisca vitripennis) feeding on a plant. Its activity is being recorded by an AC-DC electrical penetration graph (EPG) monitor. Silver print paint has been used to attach a pure gold wire to the insect. The electrical waveform allows researchers to study feeding behaviours while the mouthparts are inserted inside a plant. This research looks at how this insect transmits Pierce's disease bacteria into grape vines.
