Caption: Plant disease transmission research. Entomologist preparing a glassy-winged sharpshooter (Homalodisca vitripennis) so that its feeding can be recorded by an AC-DC electrical penetration graph (EPG) monitor (left). Silver print paint is being used to attach a pure gold wire to the insect. The electrical waveform allows researchers to study feeding behaviours while the mouthparts are inserted inside a plant. This research looks at how this insect transmits Pierce's disease bacteria into grape vines (right).
