Caption: Leptospira bacteria research. Researchers studying images of Leptospira bacteria in silver-stained experimental tissues. This bacteria, often transmitted in animal urine, causes leptospirosis which has a range of symptoms depending on type, ranging from mild to severe. These bacteria are part of a wider class known as spirochaetes, with long, helically coiled (spiral-shaped) cells. The tissue on the screen is from a kidney. An advanced form of this disease, causing kidney failure, is known as Weil's disease.
