Caption: Advanced Light Source. Advanced Light Source storage ring used in synchrotron radiation research. The ring is roughly circular, being made of 12 10-metre long arc-shaped sections and 12 6-metre long straight sections. The ring's aluminium vacuum chamber has an internal pressure of one trillionth of an atmosphere. Hundreds of electromagnets focus a beam of electrons; this beam is equivalent to a current of 250-400 milliamps. The electrons travel for hours in the ring, circling it more than a million times a second. They give off synchrotron radiation when they are made to change direction.
