Caption: Advanced Light Source. Advanced Light Source (ALS) 5-centimetre-period undulator used to create synchrotron radiation. The undulator contains over 100 permanent magnets (upper & lower centre) lined in 4.5-metre arrays above and below a high-energy electron beam (represented here by a light). The attractive force between the arrays is equivalent to 38 tonnes. The magnets force the electrons into a snake-like path so that the synchrotron radiation they give off as they change direction adds together. Undulators provide bright laser- like synchrotron radiation that is partially in- phase (coherent) & linearly polarised.
