Caption: Polarised light micrograph of crystals of Michler's ketone. Its full chemical name is bis(p-dimethylaminophenyl)-ketone. Michler's ketone is formed by the reaction of phosgene and dimethylaniline. Both the dichloride form (produced by reaction with phosphorus trichloride) and the oxidised form (produced by reaction with lead dioxide) are used commercially as bases for a series of triphenylmethane dyes. Magnification x12 at 35mm size.
