Caption: Margaret J. Penston, British astronomer. Penston studied at Edinburgh and Sussex universities. She worked at the Royal Greenwich Observatory from 1963 to 1998, and for over 15 years on the European Space Agency's Hipparcos project. From 1998 to 2001 she worked for the UK's Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council. She is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, a Member of the International Astronomical Union, and a Member of the Institute of Physics. She has served as President of the Society for Popular Astronomy. Penston was made MBE in 2001. Photographed in 2007, at the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge, UK.
