Caption: Nigel Oscar Weiss (born 1936), South African-born British astrophysicist and mathematician. His research is in astrophysical and geophysical fluid dynamics, including studies of sunspots. In the background is part of the surface of the Sun, showing granulation and a sunspot (dark area). Weiss was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1992. From 1987 until his retirement, he was Professor of Mathematical Astrophysics at Cambridge. President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 2000 to 2002, he received its Gold Medal in 2007.
