Caption: Aerial photograph of the SPEAR electron/positron storage ring at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, California. SPEAR stands for Stanford Positron Electron Asymmetric Storage Ring & is 200 metres in circumference. It accelerates electrons & positrons in opposite directions in the same beam pipe at energies up to 4 billion electron Volts. Experiments at SPEAR produced the co- discovery of the J/psi quark (first charmed quark) and the discovery of the tau particle, a type of lepton. (June '84)
