Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Staphylococcus epidermidis (red) and Aquaspirillum serpens (yellow) bacteria. S. epidermidis are Gram-positive cocci (spherical bacteria) that are found on human skin. They are usually harmless, but are able to form biofilms on plastics and so can cause infections around medical devices such as catheters and drips. A. serpens are aerobic freshwater bacteria. They are more usually helical in shape, but colonies of rod-shaped cells can develop when the bacteria are cultured on agar slants. Magnification: x6000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
