Caption: Composite coloured satellite image of ground level ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Blue represents low UV exposure, red represents high UV exposure. The hole in the ozone layer allows more UV rays from the Sun into Earth's atmosphere and raises exposure levels. Higher UV exposure has been linked to skin cancer in humans. Image taken by NASA's total ozone mapping spectrometer (TOMS) satellite between July and November 2003.
