Caption: Stevia cultivation. The leaves of the plant Stevia rebaudiana are used as a natural sweetener and sugar substitute. The products prepared from this plant are 300 times sweeter than sugar but have little effect on blood glucose levels. It is used as a natural sweetener for people on a carbohydrate-controlled diet. Native to Paraguay and Brazil, this is part of an attempt to cultivate the plant on an industrial scale in France. Photographed in August 2012, at the Marssillargues research centre, Herault, France.
