Caption: Tsiolkovsky's first spaceship. Drawing from the 1883 book 'Free Space' by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in which he imagines a design of a spaceship. It shows the occupants in weightlessness, gyroscopes for directional control, an airlock for accessing the outside (left) and a mass-ejection propulsion system (right). Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935) was a pioneer of aviation and aerospace design. One of the first to use open-section wind tunnels, Tsiolkovsky laid many of the foundations of modern aerodynamics. He is best known for his visionary work on the problems of space travel.
