Babesia protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Babesia sp. protozoan and red blood cells. Several Babesia species cause malaria-like diseases in humans and livestock. Seen here is the sporozoite, the infectious stage which is transmitted via tick bites. It enters an erythrocyte (red blood cell) and undergoes asexual reproduction. The offspring burst the cell and enter the bloodstream, ready to infect additional erythrocytes. Magnification: x8000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
