Caption: Avian influenza virus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Each virus consists of ribonucleic acid (RNA) core (red), surrounded by a nucleocapsid (yellow) and a lipid envelope (green). In the envelope are two types of protein spike, haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), which determine the strain of virus. The natural hosts of this virus are wild birds. Some strains of avian influenza, notably H5N1 and H7N9, have infected humans that have contact with infected birds. Magnification: x226,600 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
