Caption: Fungal parasite on mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hyphae (white) of the Metarhizium anisopliae fungus covering the body of a mosquito (Anopheles sp.) larva. M. anisopliae grows naturally in soils throughout the world and acts as a parasite on various arthropod species, causing green muscardine disease and killing the host. It has been used as a form of biological pest control. Magnification: x23 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
