Caption: Spider's silk. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of silk from an orb-weaver spider (family Araneidae). Spider's silk is produced by spinnerets on the end of a spider's abdomen and is made of a protein polymer called fibroin. It is very elastic and can be stretched 30-40 percent of its length before it breaks. Magnification: x1200 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
