Caption: Illustration of a migraine. The migraine is caused by the dura mater vessels swelling (at the dura mater). The trigeminal nerve transmits the information about the pain to the brain, at the same time a drop in serotonine (anti-pain neurotransmitter) prevents the pain circuit from being regulated. Real migraines only affect one half of the brain, but some migraines are accompanied by auras , most commonly ophthalmic auras . Two thirds of migraine sufferers experience intense pain in the forehead and the nape of the neck.
