Caption: Reportage on the Baby Lab research team at Paris' Descartes University. This unit studies early perception of speech and the ability of new-borns to learn syntaxically. The researchers use the NIRS technique (Near-InfraRed Spectroscopy) to measure cerebral activity. The NRIS allows the concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin in the blood to be measured, which is closely correlated to the activation of neurones that consume oxygen. The NRIS is carried out in a maternity service, on 2 or 3-day old new-borns.
