Caption: Polarised light micrograph of a rotifer (phylum Rotifera) containing an embryo (brown). Also called wheel animals, rotifers are common in freshwater environments. They use their cilia (microscopic hairs) and two toe-like projections for locomotion. They are dioecious (have males and females of the species) but can reproduce either sexually or by parthenogenesis (female asexual reproduction). Magnification: x330 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
