Caption: Polarised light micrograph of Gomphonema sp. diatoms (triangular) and Oscillatoria sp. cyanobacteria (tubular). Cyanobacteria are blue-green algae that obtain their energy through photosynthesis. Magnification: x670 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
