Caption: Polarised light micrograph of a Collotheca sp. rotifer (foreground) near Sphagnum sp. moss leaves (background). Also called wheel animals, rotifers are common in freshwater environments. Collotheca sp. rotifers have very long cilia (tendrils) that they use to create a current in the water around them and draw in food. They are omnivorous, eating bacteria, debris or small protozoans. Magnification: x670 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
