Caption: Polarised light micrograph of a Stephanoceros fimbriatus rotifer. Also called wheel animals, rotifers are common in freshwater environments. Stephanoceros fimbriatus has a long, narrow foot for anchoring itself to surfaces. They are omnivorous, eating bacteria, debris or small protozoans. Magnification: x160 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
