Caption: Burst fractures of the thoracic spine. Labelled artworks and corresponding MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan showing burst fractures of the eighth and ninth thoracic vertebrae (T8 and T9). The scan and artworks show sagittal sections, with the rear of the spine at right in each view. The artwork at left is a view of a normal spine, with the skull and brain (including the cerebrum and cerebellum) at upper left. The cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae are labelled, with both T8 and T9 highlighted (yellow). Both vertebrae have undergone a burst fracture, a traumatic spinal injury usually due to a high-energy impact (e.g. car accident or fall from a height).
