Caption: Mariopteris muricata is an extinct plant that lived mainly in the Upper Carboniferous (= Pennsylvanian) epoch. It was a seed fern with climbing (liana-type) properties, as opposed to most seed ferns in those era's, which had tree like habitats. Some Mariopteris species (not the one here displayed) had climbing hooks at the end of the leaves, but many types of leaves occur in the group.
