Caption: Bird heart. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through a house martin (Delichon urbica) heart. At top is the right atrium, which collects deoxygenated blood (dark red) from the body. The blood then passes into the right ventricle (right), from which it is pumped to the lungs to be oxygenated. The oxygenated blood will return to the left atrium (not seen) of the heart, pass into the left ventricle (partly seen at left) and then be pumped around the body via the ascending aorta (oval at top left. Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
