Caption: Chicken stomach. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the proventriculus, the first part of the stomach, of a chicken (Gallus domesticus). The proventriculus is a glandular organ that secretes digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid. The interior of the proventriculus is lined with mucosa (blue). Surrounding the mucosa are adenomeres (purple), which produce the digestive fluids. The outer layer, the tunica muscularis (red), consists of muscles and blood vessels. Magnification: x3 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
