Caption: Cat windpipe. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the trachea (windpipe) of a cat (Felis domestica). At bottom are the columnar epithelial cells that line the trachea. They have hair-like cilia on their surface that beat to move mucous, and particles trapped in it, upwards out of the respiratory tract. The mucus produced by mucosa glands (red, hollow) and secreted by goblet cells (green). An incomplete ring of hyaline cartilage (green) is across centre. Cartilage rings support the trachea. Across top is a layer of smooth muscle (red and green). Magnification: x10 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
