The epidermis consists of an outer layer of dead keratinised cells (black), which act as a protective barrier, and an inner layer of living cells (dark purple). Below this is the dermis, a layer of connective tissue (pink), blood vessels (red circles) and hairs (green). Below this is adipose (fat) tissue (yellow). Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
