Caption: Dragonfly nymph gills. Light micrograph of the posterior gills of the aquatic larva (nymph) of a dragonfly (Aeschna sp.). Water is taken into the rectum in order for it to pass over the gills. The forcible expulsion of this water can be used by the nymph to propel itself away from danger. Magnification: x13 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
