Caption: Earthworm. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through an earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris). The outer layer of the skin is the epidermis (light purple), which contains glands that secrete mucus to aid the worm's movement. Beneath this are layers of muscle (purple). Along centre is the intestine, with the gizzard, at speacilised chamber used for grinding food, at left. The nephridia, which are similar to kidneys are purple. At bottom centre is the nerve cord (orange). Magnification: x4 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
