Caption: Cyanide crystals, polarised light micrograph. Cyanides are produced by a number of bacteria, fungi and algae. They are also found in some foods, including cassava roots and bitter almonds, fruit pits, exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke. Cyanide is poisonous to humans, causing convulsions and respiratory problems, and can be fatal. Cyanides are also used in electroplating, photographic development, gold mining and plastic manufacture. Magnification: x70 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
