Caption: Comminuted fracture of the elbow. Labelled artwork and corresponding X-ray of extensive comminuted fractures of the distal (elbow) end of the humerus bone in a patient's left arm. A comminuted fracture is where the bone has broken into several pieces. This is an anterior (frontal) view of the elbow in its extended position, with the fractures being of the lateral and medial condyles. The artwork at right shows the location of the elbow bones in the arm, with the joint in extension. For the surgery carried out, see C021/0785. Screws and metal plates fixed across the condylar fractures held the fragments in place, allowing them to heal in the correct alignment.
