Caption: Fractures of femur and tibia. Labelled artwork and corresponding frontal X-ray of a fracture of the right femur and a fracture of the left tibia. The femoral fracture is an acute (sudden) comminuted fracture. A comminuted fracture is where the bone has broken into several pieces. The broken femur has lacerated (torn) the right popliteal artery. The injury has also resulted in avulsion (forcible detachment) of the adductor muscle (lower left) that is normally attached to the femur. Such fractures require surgery to reset and pin the bones, and repair other damaged tissues.
