Caption: Type II Salter fracture in the knee. Labelled artworks and corresponding X-ray of a type II Salter fracture of the distal femur and proximal tibia. This type of fracture (also called Salter-Harris fracture) affects children as their bones develop. At upper centre is an anterior (frontal view) artwork of the normal knee in a growing child, with the epiphysis (end of the bone) labelled. Above the epiphysis are the growth plate (physis) and the metaphysis. At lower right, an artwork from the same viewpoint shows fractured ends of the femur and tibia. Type II Salter fractures are of the metaphysis and physis, as opposed to just the physis (type I) or the physis and epiphysis (type III).
