Caption: Facial skull fractures fixation. Labelled artwork and post-surgery 3D scans of a skull where surgeons have carried out internal fixation of fractured facial bones. This is a repair of compound (open) fractures of the left side of the face, with the mouth wired shut to aid healing. The metal implants are plates, screws, titanium mesh and wires, holding together the left maxilla, the upper jaw bone, and the orbital bones of the left eye socket. The zygomatic arch has also been broken. Such fractures are typically caused by blunt force trauma. The metal implants fix and hold the broken bones in place, allowing them to heal in their correct alignments.
