Caption: Graft implant to repair dissecting aorta. Labelled artworks showing the surgical implantation of a graft to repair a dissecting aorta. The aorta is the main blood vessel emerging from the heart, with the aortic arch and descending thoracic portion shown here. An aortic dissection is where a tear forms between the inner and outer layers. At left, a clamp is applied across the upper descending thoracic aorta and the proximal aneurysm (swollen area of the aorta) opened while some of the peripheral arteries are ligated. At right, the distal clamp is moved down the aorta as the graft is sewn into place, with various techniques used to control bleeding.
