Caption: Surgery for decubitus ulcer. Sequence of artworks showing the surgery carried out to treat a condition known as a decubitus ulcer. This ulcer can develop in the skin at the base of the spine at the top of the buttocks. At left is a posterior (rear) view of a decubitus ulcer in a stage IV case. The surgery starts at upper centre with a circumferential incision to excise the decubitus ulcer. At upper right, the surrounding skin is cut and pulled away to expose the gluteus flap. At lower centre, the gluteus muscle is elevated and moved with the skin flap to fill the defect. At lower right, the surgery is completed by using sutures to secure the muscle flap.
