Caption: Brain injuries and abnormalities. Labelled artworks of axial views of the brain illustrating some injuries and abnormalities. The front of the brain is at top. At left are two types of haematomas (blood accumulation from internal bleeding), a subdural one below the skull (in the epidural space) and one outside the skull below the scalp. The ventricles have shifted 14.4 milllimetres, a condition known as a midline shift. At upper right are atrophy of the frontal lobe and unidentified abnormalities (red). At lower right, an encephalomalacia (softening or loss of brain tissue) has followed a craniotomy (removal and replacement of part of the skull).
