Caption: Epidural blood patch. Labelled artwork of a blood patch being injected into the epidural space in the backbone (vertebral column). The main artwork and the inset detail are sagittal views of the base of the spine. These spinal joints (L4-L5 and L5-S1) are part of the lumbar and lumbosacral spine. The needle has been inserted through the intervertebral disc (blue) between two vertebrae and used to inject blood from elsewhere in the patient's body into the space between the dura mater (outer membrane of the spinal cord) and the vertebrae. An epidural blood patch is applied following a lumbar puncture to patch holes in the dura mater (hole visible in both diagrams).
