Caption: Mars, photographed from Earth through a telescope. The ice covered north pole can be seen at the bottom (south is at top). Top left is Syrtis Major (dark area), a martian shield volcano. The bright area below Syrtis Major is the Hellas basin. The distance between Earth and Mars at the time this photograph was taken was 92 million kilometres. This distance varies depending on both planets' orbits. Photographed in 1967.
