Caption: Dentine, or dentin, is one of the main components of teeth. It is a mineral layer underneath the outer enamel layer mostly composed of hydroxylapatite. Dentine can become exposed if the enamel layer is eroded, causing sensitivity. The microscopic holes in dentine can allow hot and cold liquids and food to penetrate to the nerve endings inside the teeth, causing pain. Magnification: x10,000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
