Caption: Epidermis, fluorescent light micrograph. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. Keratin (green, top right) forms the top layer of the epidermis and acts as a barrier between the body and the outside world. Defensin (red) is produced by keratinocytes (keratin-producing cells, blue) and acts as a natural antimicrobial. Two arterioles (green), which are small arterial blood vessels, are at centre left.
