Caption: Epidermis, fluorescent light micrograph. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. Keratin (green, right) forms the top layer of the epidermis and acts as a barrier between the body and the outside world. Dendritic cells (red) can be seen amongst the blue keratinocytes (keratin-producing cells). Dendritic cells are white blood cells that are part of the immune response to infection. An arteriole (green), can be seen running through the epidermis at bottom left.
