Caption: Ultrastructure of a typical cell, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). In yellow are the cell's mitochondria, the energy stores of the cell where aerobic respiration takes place. In purple is the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), which is a membrane-bound organelle that is the site of lipid synthesis and the production of membrane-bound proteins. The light dots surrounding the RER are ribosomes. At centre is the Golgi apparatus (green), responsible for packaging and processing newly synthesised proteins. Surrounding all these organelles is the cell's cytoplasm.
