Caption: Fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) mouth parts, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The two lobes seen here are the opened end of the proboscis, which widens the surface area of the fly's mouth. The system of fine canals that line these lobes are called pseudotracheae. These absorb the fermenting juices of the rotting fruit this fly feeds on.
