Caption: Isaac Lea (1792-1886), US conchologist. Lea worked as a publisher in Philadelphia, USA. In his spare time, he studied natural history and specialised in conchology, the study of mollusc shells. He amassed a large collection of freshwater mussels, and published papers on molluscs over a period of some 50 years. His magnum opus was the 13-volume work that was titled 'Observations on the Genus Unio' (1827-1874). He also served as President of various scientific societies: the American Academy of Natural Sciences (1858-1863), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1860), and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.
