Caption: J. Peter Lesley (1819-1903), US geologist. Lesley trained as a Christian minister and preacher, while also pursuing his interest in geology by assisting in the first geological survey of Pennsylvania. By 1851, he had abandoned his ministry and become a consulting geologist. He rose to become State Geologist of Pennsylvania in 1874, as well as professor of geology at the University of Pennsylvania (1872-1878). He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and active in the American Philosophical Society (secretary and librarian) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This daguerreotype dates from circa 1850.
