Caption: Dried trumpet-tree (Cecropia obtusifolia) specimens. This plant shares a symbiotic relationship with Azteca ants (Azteca andreae). The ants protect the tree from parasites and insects, and the tree provides food and shelter for the ants. The stems of the plant have small, naturally occurring orifices for the ants to colonise. These samples of leaf, flower and bark are from the Cayenne herbarium, French Guiana.
