Caption: Ducks covered in oil after an oil spill. This oil spill is the result of a ruptured pipeline running through the Kalamazoo river, Michigan, USA. The spill happened in 2010, and three million litres of oil were released into the river. Oiled birds will constantly preen in an effort to clean themselves, to a point where they forget to eat and drink. They must therefore be washed and cleaned by hand if they are to survive.

Release details: Model release not required. Property release not required.
